What’s Really Going on with My Child’s Focus and Emotional Regulation?

CAYP Psychology

With Consultant Clinical Psychologist Dr Daniel Weisberg in conversation with Assistant Psychologist and former Teacher Ruby Cole. This session will explore what may be driving ongoing difficulties with focus, emotional regulation and impulsive behaviour in children and young people. We will look beyond surface-level behaviours to consider what might be happening underneath, and how differences in attention, processing, sensory needs and emotional development can shape how a child responds to the world around them. We will discuss why some young people can feel constantly overwhelmed, highly reactive or quick to shut down, and how these experiences can affect learning, friendships, confidence and day-to-day family life. We will also consider how environments at home and school can either heighten or reduce stress, and what helps children feel more settled, understood and able to engage. Alongside this, we will share practical, psychologically informed strategies that can be used straight away. The session will focus on tools to support regulation, reduce overwhelm and build more predictable, supportive routines across home and school. Our aim is for parents and carers to leave with a clearer understanding of what may be going on for their child, as well as realistic, compassionate approaches that support the whole family.
